"Liar" is a visceral power ballad on Mumford and Sons’ U.K.-released EP Lend Me Your Eyes (2008). It may not be nearly as famous as the group's Grammy Award-nominated "Little Lion Man" on Sigh No More (2009), but “Liar” roars masterfully from the years when the foursome London balladeers played in the intimacy of underground folk clubs.
Marshall "Country" Winston plays the soft banjo riffs of a romantic folky song, as vocalist Marcus Mumford sings with the eerily, hushed tones of a worn-down lover. He’s giving up on someone who’s denied his affections ("Oh this love that I've found, I detest"). He interprets the one-line chorus, "Oh please, don't cry, you liar" with a forceful, irking voice, exuding sadness. The chorus gains momentum as rollicking banjo and guitar phrases lead into a melodic climax. Then, Mumford conveys the sadness of "too many words left unsaid," as his voice nearly breaks with tears.
